Freezing Stability in Civil Engineering:

Low-Temperature Systems for Ground Freezing & Tunnel Construction

Ground freezing is a proven method in special foundation engineering, where our high-performance low-temperature equipment is used to deliberately freeze the soil in order to stabilize it and make it impermeable to water. This technique is especially essential in tunnel construction, shaft construction, or complex excavation enclosures to ensure safe construction under challenging geological conditions.

Rental Cooling in Tunnel Construction

In this process, our low-temperature systems serve as so-called ground freezing machines. The soil is cooled via special refrigeration circuits using coolants such as methanol, glycol, or Tyfoxit to temperatures between −15 °C and −40 °C. This creates a homogeneous frozen body that provides the surrounding soil with temporary stability and prevents water ingress. Construction work can then continue safely and without interruption. The refrigeration unit maintains a constant temperature until the structure has developed sufficient intrinsic stability. After that, the cooling is gradually and safely shut down.

Tunnel Construction: Highly Specialized Technology Underground

Tunnel construction is one of the most complex disciplines in civil engineering. It creates underground connections for transportation, utility systems, transport routes, or research facilities. The choice of tunneling method – whether blasting, shield driving, or drilling – depends heavily on the soil conditions. This is exactly where artificial ground freezing comes into play: it provides temporary safety in unstable soils, high groundwater pressure, or challenging site conditions.

Typical Applications of Our Low-Temperature Cooling in Civil Engineering:

  • Ground freezing in tunnel construction
  • Freeze protection in shaft and well construction
  • Excavation enclosure in areas with groundwater risk
  • Restoration of collapsed underground structures
  • Safe sampling in sensitive soil conditions
